What does elope mean in 2022?

When you see the word Elope/Elopement/Eloping do you think about a glamorous destination wedding in some faraway country?
A rushed secret ceremony at the courthouse?
Or just something people did during 2020?

The pandemic has changed a lot of things and one of them has been the way people are considering getting married BUT this isn’t just a COVID wedding thing.

To understand why eloping was seen as Scandalous we’ve got to talk about what it meant centuries ago.

When you google “Elopement” the trusted Wikipedia page pops up with the centuries-old formal definition:

“Elopement refers to a marriage conducted in sudden and secretive fashion, usually involving a hurried flight away from one’s place of residence together with one’s beloved with the intention of getting married without parental approval.”

Obviously, that’s a very outdated definition so…

What does eloping mean in 2021?

When referring to the Merriam-Webster articleThe Changing Meaning of Eloping, eloping has changed to simply refers to “a small destination wedding” with anywhere from 2-20 guests.

Great, it’s no longer considered wildly scandalous but I do want to clear something up in that definition

You DO NOT have to go to a faraway land to elope!

Eloping is anything that breaks away from a traditional wedding and is up for your personal interpretation.

To me, eloping means to have a unique and intimate ceremony focused on celebrating two people’s commitment to one another in their own authentic way.

You can actually go to the courthouse, get married, and have a wondrous celebration afterward.
You can pick a place that is special for the two of you and say your vows there!
Love the Pisgah National Forest…with the right permits, you can elope there!
You can elope in any state in (almost) any place that matters to you!
Totally go on an adventure elopement out of state (or the country) or keep it local and say your vows where you first said ‘I love you’.

There are no rules about what your elopement day needs to look like.

It’s about having an experience that is unique to you two for the day you legally commit to your significant other.

Now you might be wondering if eloping is right for you?

Traditional weddings are wonderful and beautiful but they are not for everyone.

If the thought of planning a traditional wedding isn’t sitting well with you…eloping might be what you’re looking for.

There are no right or wrong answers and it basically boils down to… what do you think is best for you?

I’ll be posting a blog about “is eloping right for me?” in the next couple of days that addresses this specific question!

In the meantime shot me an email if you have any questions and we can talk about your ideas and figure out the best way for you to say “I DO”
